LASG sensitises residents to plastic recycling

The Lagos State Government has kicked off the 2023 World Environment Day celebrations with a sensitisation campaign to encourage residents on the need for recycling plastics in the state.

During the sensitisation campaign, which began at the Lagos State secretariat in Alausa, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Gaji Omobolaji, discouraged the use of single-use plastic bags and bottles.

Employees who came into the secretariat with single-use plastic bags and bottles had them exchanged with multi-use bags and water bottles.

This is according to a press release signed on Thursday by the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Adekunle Adeshina.

Addressing some of the workers at the secretariats main gate, Omobolaji said the plastic waste had become a critical issue affecting the environment.

Represented by the Director of Environmental Education, Mrs Monsurat Banire, Omobolaji explained that plastic waste had become a menace in society, adding that an increase in its improper disposal portends great danger to human health.

He noted that plastic waste, if not disposed of properly, usually ended up in the ocean, thereby endangering marine and human life.

Speaking on the theme of the 2023 World Environment Day, Solutions to plastic pollution, Omobolaji said the campaign was to ensure the best way residents can avoid single-use plastics and embrace eco-friendly alternatives so that the planet remains a comfortable home for humanity.
